Three Real Conspiracies

1. Government Tested Effects of LSD On U.S. and Canadian Citizens
"Under the code name "MKUltra," the U.S. government ran a human-research operation within the CIA's Scientific Research Division. Researchers tested the effects of hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, torture, and most memorably, LSD, on U.S. and Canadian citizens. Most had no idea."

2. Operation Northwoods
"According to secret and long-hidden documents obtained for Body of Secrets, the Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government. In the name of antiCommunism, they proposed launching a secret and bloody war of terrorism against their own country in order to trick the American public into supporting an ill-conceived war they intended to launch against Cuba."

3. FBI Tried to Coerce Martin Luther King Jr. Into Committing Suicide
"One FBI memo refers to King as "the most dangerous and effective Negro leader in the country." Former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover feared Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so much he sent King an anonymous letter urging him to commit suicide. FBI records give a detailed account of the organization's efforts to derail King's civil rights work."

"There's a lesson to learn here: history must play a central role in the debate around spying today. As Professor Gage states:
Should intelligence agencies be able to sweep our email, read our texts, track our phone calls, locate us by GPS? Much of the conversation swirls around the possibility that agencies like the N.S.A. or the F.B.I. will use such information not to serve national security but to carry out personal and political vendettas. King’s experience reminds us that these are far from idle fears, conjured in the fevered minds of civil libertarians. They are based in the hard facts of history."
